Every January, we hear the same mantra: “New Year, New Me!” But let’s be real—without a true, lasting commitment to change, it’s just another year of the same habits, the same struggles, and the same results.
The problem isn’t the calendar. The problem is the mindset. Setting resolutions without real commitment is like trying to drive a car without gas—you won’t get far.
Why Most Resolutions Fail
A resolution without action is just wishful thinking. It feels good in the moment to declare your intentions, but unless you back it up with consistent effort, nothing will actually change. Think about last year. Did you make big plans? Did you follow through? If not, what stopped you?
For most people, the answer is simple: they weren’t truly ready to commit. Change is hard, and it doesn’t come from flipping a calendar page. It comes from deciding, every single day, to do the work—even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or downright hard.
Want a New Year? Change You
If you want this year to be different, it starts with you. Not your gym membership, not a fancy diet plan, not a resolution scribbled on a piece of paper. It starts with a decision to show up for yourself every day.
Here’s the truth: You won’t magically wake up as a new person on Monday. But you can wake up today and take the first step toward becoming the person you want to be.
Start small. Start messy. But most importantly, start.
This year doesn’t have to be the same as last year. But to make it different, you have to be different. So, what’s your first step?
PS: I’ve now been working with most of my clients for 3-5 years. Not one of them stuck to a fitness program anywhere close to that long before working with me. Is it because I’ve come up with the best fitness program ever? I’d like to think so, but probably not. It’s because I provide them with accountability when they would normally falter. The secret to changing yourself is to have someone call you on your bullshit and keep you in the game. If you try to change yourself on your own, you may have success, but without the right accountability, you will revert back to your comfort zone.
